Reading

Reading features endless miles of trails available for hiking, horseback riding and biking. The Appalachian Trail passes through Berks County on its Maine to Georgia route. Bicycling Magazine ranked nearby Blue Marsh Lake as number one for its 32 miles of trails. The land, water and birding trails of the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area offers many exciting wonders to explore.

Parks abound in Greater Reading and Berks County. Blue Marsh Lake and the Schuylkill River offer swimming, boating, canoeing, and kayaking opportunities throughout the year. French Creek State Park and Nolde Forest Environment Education Center also offer numerous outdoor activities.

RiverPlace is the planned riverfront development that will bring the community together by Schuylkill River. This area is bound to be a hotspot as it will be replete with shops, restaurants, cafes, galleries, museums, and nightlife. All this entertainment will be just a short walk from the stunning riverfront.

The Reading Nature Center develops environmental awareness and provides a safe learning environment for the City of Reading and its surrounding areas. Each season they schedule events that are open to the public, however groups are also encouraged to schedule their own visits and activities. All activities are free of charge unless otherwise stated. The Reading Nature Center is a perfect place to explore with family and friends. It is also a great location to bring school groups or boy-scout and girl-scout groups, for field trips.

Just south of Reading are the largest and finest farms in the county. Berks ranks third among all Pennsylvania counties in cash receipts from agriculture which total $73.9 million. Income derived from dairy production is $29.3 million; field and forage crops total to $25.7 million; poultry comes in with $10.2 million; and meat animals total $8.7 million.

The greater Reading area has seen a significant amount of achievements. For example, this area has been recognized as one of the top five areas in the United States for emerging markets. USA Today and the Today Show have even featured the Reading area for this recognition and for the many opportunities available in Real Estate.

Reading’s history dates back to 1733. The city was set at what was then known as Finney’s Ford, an intersection of two great valleys, the east Penn-Lebanon Valley and the Schuylkill River. During the French and Indian war, Reading became a military base for a chain of forts along the Blue Mountains. Reading bore its appropriate burden during many wars including the Civil War and World War II. The early 1800s boasted the great turnpike and canal era, succeeded by the building of the Reading Railroad, radiating in all directions from the city of Reading. Throughout the years, Reading has slowly grown to become the fine city it is today.
